oh well

Something I really like about university is that suddenly being a loser is the most useful thing in the world. All that time as a kid without buddies and now it's coming in handy!

The options are probably the coolest and most overwhelming thing. Wanna learn German? OK! Twentieth century art history? That too! The major works of twelve major writers? Ya sure whatever you want!

As much as I am complaining about school right now (because it's hell at the moment) I have learned so much this year that I'm actually starting to worry about at what point will my brain no longer retain information? Does it just start pushing older facts out my ears? Maybe this is why I can't do long division anymore.
Very serious! Don't even remember how.

People kept saying to me all throughout my younger youth how important math was for the future and blah blah blah but you know what? I took stupid math in grade eleven and it was the best choice I ever made and not once has it come to bite me in the ass yet (knock wood watch now it will happen). However the classes that have come in handy on more than one occasion were all of the really 'impractical' ones - ancient civs, world issues, writer's craft, world religious, philosophy, drama for four years, photography...

Our school system is designed to pump out mathy sciency people, computer technicians and administrators and skilled tradespersons. So, the maths and sciences are the big prerequisites that you can't get around, despite the fact that for certain individuals it should really be the liberal arts.

If you want to work as an artist, you should have studied philosophy at some point. Arts/philosophy seem pretty inextricably linked to me - not just saying that because I danced about philosophy for twelve hours - and it's shocking how many dancers in particular I meet who have not done any sort of critical thinking.
This isn't a jab against dancers, more against dance training - I have problems with classical/traditional dance training, this much is obvious.

Anyway, I really didn't mean to start talking about this again, I was planning on talking about all the exciting non-dance classes I am taking this summer. Guess this is a testament to how badly I need to study something non-dance related.

Last night was Xenia's birthday and Xenia's birthday party. It was apocalyptic weather and there were still tons of people out. Happy birthday, Xenia! Our lives are richer for you being in them, surely.

And tuesday is Gwen's birthday. Big birthday time! Happy early birthday, Gwen, our first date was apocalyptic weather too, all the better for having gotten to hang out for twelve hours and talk about our feelings/watch are you afraid of the dark. Hopefully this summer can bring a repeat.

dear friends!
